When people think of skincare, they most usually think of women. That’s not a stretch, because society is big on catering this phenomenon to the fairer sex. So what about the men? Are they doomed to simply watch their skin age day by day? Or should they get stuck with floral face washes and pink clay masks?

The truth is, there’s a lot of male skincare out there, but in my experience not a lot of men use it. Why? Nobody knows. It could be they don’t know enough about it, don’t want to know anything about it, or are simply not interested. Whatever the reason is, today, we’ll try to list simple routine for men they can follow, together with some brands that are either specifically developed for them, or are unisex and won’t bring any florals or frills to the skincare party.

Why Do Men Need Skincare?

To answer this question, let’s have a look at the differences between men and women in terms of their skin. Men’s bodies contain more testosterone, a hormone that is known for increasing sebum production in the skin. That means their skin is typically oilier than women’s. Their skin is also a bit thicker in general, plus they have higher natural levels of collagen. (You know, the stuff that keeps the wrinkles away).

Men have to shave (or not, depending on their preferences, but most men do), and as a result of that, ingrown hairs and facial irritation can occur. Ladies, think of your legs or armpits after you shave them. Then imagine that on your face. Not the nicest idea, is it? Fun fact: men who are clean-shaven practice a form of scrubbing daily as they shave! However, as I said before, this is a big enabler of sensitive and irritated skin, which is why a good moisturizer will work wonders!

Most men will go their entire life without developing a set skincare routine. However, there are guys out there that have a routine that is at least as elaborate as the 10 step Korean program I talked about earlier. For the gentlemen out there who do not have that 10 step program down, let’s have a look at the most basic skincare routine that will still keep your face happy and healthy.

The Basic Skincare Routine for Men

Okay, before we get started, let me just state that in my eyes, skincare routines are universal. Anyone can choose to use whatever routine works for them. That being said however, I’m hoping a simplified version of my basic skincare routine will be more convenient and therefore easier to maintain. This could lower the threshold for people to get into skincare.

So here’s my basic routine:

1. Cleanse

2. Exfoliate

3. Moisturize

4. SPF

That’s it! Just three small steps twice daily, plus a scrubbing session twice a week. If you wanted to, you could add in an eye cream or some beard care products, but it’s not going to get easier than this. Just these steps alone are going to make a big difference in your skin condition. Remember, doing anything is better than doing nothing! Next step: Skincare brands specifically tailored to men!

Skincare Brands for Men

CliniqueMen

Clinique is a hugely known skincare brand, known to cater to all skin types with dermatologically tested products. They offer lots of products for men, from a face wash to a serum to aftershave. All of their products are fragrance free and come in beautiful dark grey packaging.

The nice part of Clinique? They offer skincare advice for men. Their famous three step program has two options for men too, dry to normal and oily. That means you’d only have to look on one website, and click one link for everything you need from the list above.

Kiehl’s

If you thought Clinique had a nice range of products, Kiehl’s blows it out of the water. They offer multiple ranges for men, from daily care to anti ageing, from oil control to energizing. They also offer hair styling products and even a beard oil that looks very attractive!

In terms of shaving, they offer shaving cream, shaving balm and aftershave, and they added some hand cream and body wash to the mix too. It seems like Kiehl’s has it all figured out when it comes to catering to men, and I like it!

Tom Ford

For the men among us that prefer a more luxury feel, Tom Ford is the way to go! Tom Ford is of course best known as a luxury clothing brand, but they have an entire skincare line for men (and women too!) They offer much of the same type of products as Kiehl’s, but they add multiple options for your beard oil, and even threw in a lip balm.

Other products include bronzing gel, body scrubs and lotions for body and face. The most interesting product I saw at Tom Ford is the mud mask for men. Lots of great ingredients for your skin and no big red flags in sight! If you’ve got the budget to spend 61 dollars on a face mask, I suggest you go check it out!

Bulldog

I’m ending the brand list on a cheaper note. Bulldog, at the moment, is one of the biggest brands in men’s skincare, and I totally see why. In contrast to the other brands mentioned above, Bulldog exclusively tailors to men and offers six different ranges of skincare. It’s also by far the most affordable option among these brands, a face wash retailing at just 4,5 dollars.

They also have extensive shaving and beard care ranges, even including their own razors. On top of that, it’s freely available in drugstores everywhere, so you can try it anywhere you want. I’m so impressed by this brand, they seem to have thought of literally anything a guy could want!

Unisex Brands

Of course, let’s not forget about unisex brands. These brands do not cater to either sex and keep their packaging and scents neutral. Examples of unisex skincare include:

  • Dermalogica
  • Skinceutica
  • Aesop
  • La Roche Posay
  • Liz Earle

These brands offer gender neutral packaging and scents, so no more unwanted florals or stickiness. They are also great if you and your significant other want to share some products!

Bringing It All Together

There you have it! Skincare for men in a nutshell. To recap, men tend to have different skin needs than women, but there are plenty of brands nowadays with a dedicated skincare line for men, and even with different ranges within that line in order to cater to men’s specific needs!

Keep in mind that it doesn’t matter who you are, either male or female, you make the decisions about your body! If you want to go all the way and commit yourself to a 10 step program, that’s great! If you want to follow the basic 3 step program I explained above, that’s perfectly fine as well!

I said it once, and I’ll say it again: Doing anything is better than doing nothing!

What do the men in your life use? Any holy grail products I should know about? Let me know in the comments!

Keep glowing!
