As our skin ages, so do our skin needs. Products that were holy grails in your twenties might not be as effective once you reach your forties. You might find you need to switch to an entirely different routine to help retain that youthful glow and to keep your skin looking plump and radiant. The reason this change happens is that our skin tends to get drier and thinner as we grow older, as well as our collagen production decreasing significantly over time.

To help you prevent wrinkles and other signs of ageing, there are hundreds of products on the market, all with some pretty impressive promises. However, which products work, and which ones don’t? Today, we’ll be taking a look at the 10 best moisturizers for ageing skin for 2019, to help you on your way to achieve eternal youth.

What to Look For

As I mentioned above, our skin becomes thinner and drier as we age, and thus when looking for a moisturizer for mature skin, we’ll need to find products that add hydration and elasticity, without irritating your skin. Our skin becomes more sensitive over time, so you’ll want to avoid any harsh products. You might find your skin has some discoloration or dark spots, maybe even sun damage, and this is something that can definitely be improved, provided you use the right products.

When looking at ingredients, here’s a list of things you should be looking out for when choosing a moisturizer for ageing skin:

  • For dehydrated or dry skin, choose hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, squalane and aloe vera
  • For wrinkles, choose hyaluronic acid, vitamin B, collagen, retinol and niacimide
  • For dark spots or discoloration, choose vitamin C, retinol, ceramides and gycolic acid
  • For improved elasticity, choose peptides, collagen, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid
  • For sensitivity, choose hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, cucumber and green tea

You’ll notice there are a couple of ingredients making multiple appearances in this list, like hyaluronic acid, vitamins, retinol and collagen. When looking at moisturizers, these are definitely must-haves. I should also mention that there is no single product that will provide a magical cocktail of skin saving components. It’s all about finding a routine that targets all of your skin issues, whilst combining different products to get as close to that magical cocktail as you can.

Like I’ve said before, everyone is different and you’ll find you will have to experiment a bit before finding a routine that will work best for you, but let’s have a look at my personal recommendations for anti-ageing moisturizers to help you on your way. Take into account that I do not use these products myself, but have looked at ingredient lists and reviews, as well as dermatologists’ recommendations.

Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream

This moisturizer comes highly recommended by dermatologists and is a popular choice within this category. It is packed with ingredients that will assist your skin in preventing wrinkles and keeping your face looking moisturized and happy. Olay’s Regenerist cream features lots of the components I mentioned above, and in high concentrations at that!

Looking at the ingredient list, this cream contains niacinamide, which will brighten your skin, panthenol, which improves wound healing, collagen, hyaluronic acid and vitamins B, B2 and E. I also spotted green tea leaf extract and aloe vera, which will help calm down sensitive skin.

Other benefits to this cream include that it is fragrance free and has SPF 25 built into it. This means that you won’t need to add a separate sunscreen step to your routine.

The downside of this cream is that is does have a couple of ingredients out there that are comedogenic, as well as containing silicone and parabens. This might mean this moisturizer is not for you if you have oily skin or are prone to breakouts.

Nevertheless, this is a great product that ticks a lot of boxes in terms of the requirements for aging skin, and I definitely recommend you give it a try!

You can buy the Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream on Amazon, or at your local drugstore, where it will cost you $25.99 or £24.90.

Vichy Aqualia Thermal Rich Cream

This moisturizer is specifically targeted at all the dry or dehydrated skin types out there. It features lots of glycerin, hyaluronic acid and Shea butter, and the combination of these three ingredients are said to be a perfect combination to ensure all day, intense hydration. It also contains salicylic acid, which will aid in preventing breakouts and excessive sebum production.

The Vichy Aqualia range is produced with 97% natural ingredients and is infused with thermal water. They claim this product will provide you with 48 hour hydration and is suitable for sensitive skin types.

This cream is paraben and sulfate free, which is a big plus, but does not contain SPF, so make sure if you use this moisturizer to add at least SPF 30 to your daily routine.

When looking at the ingredients, these claims of being suitable for sensitive skin seem to be exaggerated. The ingredient list is fairly short, and does contain a lot of products that will soothe sensitive skin like glycerin and hyaluronic acid. However, this moisturizer does also contain alcohol and citric acid, which are known skin irritants. This being said, I would not recommend this product for sensitive skin

Overall though, this product will work wonders on dry and dehydrated, non-sensitive skin. The cocktail of hydrating ingredients will surely reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve the radiance of your skin.

You can find the Vichy Aqualia Thermal Cream on Amazon or at your local drugstore, and it will set you back $31 or £19.88

No7 Protect and Perfect Intense Advanced

No7 is the resident luxury skincare brand by Boots, and is one of their best-selling products. It features lots of moisturizing ingredients and will offer plenty of hydration to your skin. This, again will lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This day cream has added peptides and retinol, as well as lots of other great ingredients.

Speaking of ingredients, the list for this product is a long one. A very long one. It includes hyaluronic acid, retinol, peptides and vitamins A and E. This means that other than providing hydration, it will also help with skin renewal and will have a brightening effect on your skin.

There are also no less than five UV protecting ingredients in this cream, which will give you a SPF15 in terms of sun protection. This is a big plus, since sun damage becomes more common at a later age.

Now, onto the things I dislike about this product. It contains alcohol, parabens and sulfates, as well as ingredients like Shea butter, which is great for dry skin, but not so great for oily types. Another thing to be aware of is that even though these products contain peptides, they are the last products on the list and thus will not be very concentrated.

Overall, however, I’m quite happy with this moisturizer. It offers tons of benefits for dry skin, with an added bonus of plenty of anti-aging holy grails. If you are not a sensitive or oily skin type, I recommend you go check it out!

You’ll find the No7 Protect and Perfect Intense Advanced Day Cream on Amazon, at Ulta, or Boots, and it will cost you $24.46 or £25.

Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Wrinkle Defense

I’ve talked about Paula’s Choice before in other posts, and the reason for that is that this brand offers fantastic products, designed by adermatologist that knows what is good for your skin. This moisturizer is tinted, and is formulated for normal, combination and oily skin, making it the first one on this list to be specifically made for these types.

Ingredients include vitamin E, which brightens complexion and alpha-bisabolol, which promotes wound healing and brightens. I also found willow bark extract in the list, which fights acne. This moisturizer is absolutely packed with antioxidants and grape extract, which will assist anti-aging even more. This product is like an anti-aging super mix, and comes quite close to that magical cocktail I spoke about earlier.

On top of that, this product offers SPF30, made possible by zinc oxide. Because of this ingredient, sensitive types will also find this product works for their skin. Again, big plus for including SPF!

The only downside I could find is the silicone in this product, but other than that, there is absolutely nothing in the ingredient list which will upset or irritate any skin type. Consider me very impressed!

This moisturizer is a great all-rounder, and will suit pretty much any skin type. It also has a bit of tint in it, so if you do have any breakouts or dark spots you want to conceal, this product may be your solution!

You can buy the Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Wrinkle Defense at Amazon, Selfridges, or the Paula’s Choice website. It will cost you $33 or £33.

Peter Thomas Roth Mineral Rich Moisturizer

Peter Thomas Roth is another brand that consistently delivers high quality products, formulated with the best ingredients for your skin. This product is full of botanical goodness, and is made with Hungarian thermal water in order to give you firmer, younger looking skin in just 7 days.

Formulated with ingredients like ceramide, adenosine, and vitamin A and E, this product is very high in antioxidants and also has the added benefits of components like evening primrose and apricot. I cannot even begin to list the amount of natural oils and botanicals that are in this product, because there is a ton of them!

The vitamin A will help with skin regeneration and elasticity, while the primrose prevents moisture loss through evaporation. Ceramide and adenosine will aid visibility of wrinkles, while glycerin and butylene glycol will provide optimal hydration. Because of these moisturizing ingredients, this product is suitable for dry and dehydrated skin types.

There is no SPF in the product, sadly. Also, be aware that this product does contain silicone and benzyl alcohol, the last one being a known allergen, so avoid this product if you are allergic to this ingredient.

If you are looking for lots of natural ingredients in your daily moisturizer, I highly recommend this one. It will aid greatly to minimize those pesky wrinkles, while still providing great hydration for your skin!

You can find the Peter Thomas Roth Hungarian Thermal Water Mineral Rich Moisturizer at Beauty Bay or Amazon, and it will cost you $58 or £50

Mario Badescu Peptide Renewal Cream

If I would have to use one sentence to describe Mario Badescu, it would be ‘simple but effective’. Their packaging is minimal, and their ingredient lists are short, but they sure pack a punch when it comes to effectiveness. This moisturizer is packed with peptides and hydrating ingredients, and is made to suit every skin type.

This moisturizer contains lots of ingredients that are effective in aiding anti-ageing, like hyaluronic acid, peptides and glycerin. It also contains willow bark extract, which will prevent breakouts from popping up. There is also some butylene glycol in there, which, when combined with the hyaluronic acid, will optimize hydration.

The combination of all these components will make for a very effective anti-ageing solution. Collagen production will be stimulated and your skin will be intensely hydrated. Fine lines and wrinkles will be minimized, and your overall complexion will look rejuvenated.

There is no SPF in this product, however, this is a very simple cream with not a lot of ingredients, but the ones that matter are in there. An added bonus for this brand is that they are unisex, so this will be a great anti-ageing option for men too!

This product is free-from, which means no parabens, no alcohol, no sulfates and no silicone, and thus makes it suitable for everyone, regardless of sensitivities or allergies. Big plus for Mario Badescu!

You can find the Mario Badescu Peptide Renewal Cream at Beauty Bay or Amazon, where it will cost you $35 or £35.

Elemis Pro Collagen Marine Cream

Elemis is mostly known as a high-end, high-quality skincare brand, and it’s because of this high quality of their products that I’ve decided to include this moisturizer in this list. This product is well-known among the skincare community and the reviews are raving!

The Pro Collagen Marine Cream is said to reduce wrinkles and fine lines in just two weeks, and is clinically proven to be effective. People say that their skin looks more radiant and toned, and their wrinkles have done a disappearing act. Elemis calls it their ultimate solution for anti-ageing.

Let’s have a look at the ingredients. This cream contains lots of vitamin E, shea butter and citric acid. It also contains ginkgo biloba, chorella and padina pavonica. All of these ingredients are known antioxidants and will aid your skin in keeping it firm and elasticized. There is also a ton of glycerin in there to provide extra hydration. Collagen will prevent wrinkles from becoming more visible and help keep them away.

Also included in this moisturizer: SPF30, to help protect you against harmful UV rays. Elemis does advice to keep reapplying sunscreen throughout the day, especially after swimming or sweating.

The downsides? This product contains fragrance and silicone. This means that this product may not be suitable for sensitive skin. Shea butter and stearic acid may cause breakouts by clogging pores, so people with oily skin should also take care when using this moisturizer.

Other than that however, another great option for mature skin with lots of antioxidants and hydrating products. I would recommend dry or normal skin types definitely give this a try!

You will find the Elemis Pro Collagen at Amazon, where it will set you back $128 or £85

Garnier Ultra-lift Complete Beauty

I was not going to forget budget friendly moisturizers in this list, and this is a great one! It’s only available in the UK, sadly. The US equivalent of this product simply does not pack as much of a punch, and thus I will not be discussing this version. Garnier is a great skincare brand that’s been really keeping track of the trends in skincare and bringing out products to suit them!

If you want to start using anti-ageing moisturizers, but do not have the budget to spend money on things like Elemis or Paula’s Choice, this product will offer you a lot of the same benefits for a fraction of the price. It is formulated with plant cell extracts and promises to help reduce the visibility of wrinkles significantly.

This is thanks to the niacinamide, vitamin A and E and antioxidants that I found in the ingredient list. All of these components will aid in brightening your complexion and smoothing out wrinkles. This product also contains glycerin and panthenol, both of which are intensely moisturizing for your skin.

Another nice bonus is the SPF15, which you will have noticed by now is a very important thing to have in your moisturizer. It just makes life easier to only have to use one product and be protected all the same.

The things I’m not too happy about are the parabens, alcohol and fragrance in this product. I know it’s easier and cheaper to use these components for moisturizers, but this will potentially rule out this option for sensitive skin types. I also spotted some silicone in this, so oily types should take care too, in order to prevent breakouts.

If you are looking for a great budget option, I highly recommend trying this product and seeing what it does for your skin. Anti-ageing does not always have to be expensive!

You can find the Garnier Ultra-Lift Complete Beauty on Amazon, or at your local drugstore like Boots or Superdrug, where it will cost you £9.99

Nivea Q10 Plus Age Spot Day Cream

Another budget option suitable for every skin type! Nivea did a great job with this product, it is dermatologically tested and has some nice benefits for ageing skin. They claim it will fight wrinkles from within because of the added Q10 and creatine, and when you use it, you will see a visible decrease in the appearance of fine lines.

Q10 is a coenzyme that we produce naturally, but our production of it decreases over time as we age. By adding this product to your daily routine, you’ll boost your Q10 levels and thus will prevent loss of elasticity and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also acts as an antioxidant, which is never a bad thing when you are considering an anti-ageing cream.

The creatine and vitamin E in this product will only boost this effect further, making this product a powerful ally in your fight against signs of ageing. All of these antioxidants together are a great combination, and I was pleasantly surprised by the ingredients in this product.

This moisturizer also offers SPF30, which is the recommended SPF in day creams, so well done to Nivea in that aspect too! They say themselves that in order to have this product show its full potential, you have to prevent new lines and wrinkles from appearing by using sun protection.

The only downsides to this moisturizer are the parabens and silicone I spotted in the ingredient list. By now, you’ll know that this might cause a problem if you are sensitive to these components.

However, there are no big red flags for any skin type, and Nivea’s claims of it being suitable for everyone certainly seem to ring true. I’m so impressed by how much this day cream offers for the price it retails for!

You can find the Nivea Q10 Plus Age Spot Day Cream at Amazon or at your local drugstore, where it retails for a price of $18.97 or £11.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream

You might have already read my review on this product, but I am going to include it in this list regardless. I won’t go over all the specifics again, but this cream will offer a fantastic boost of hydration to dry, mature skin types. I will repeat this time and time again, this product is so good!

It offers tons of hyaluronic acid and will help keep your skin feel soft and moisturized, without being an irritant to your skin. Whether you are young or need a bit more anti-ageing action, this moisturizer will help you out, with the added benefit of being very lightweight and being suitable for every skin type out there!

It will cost you $18.99 or £12.99 and is available at Amazon or your local drugstore.

Bringing It All Together

So, when looking at these products, you will have noticed that hydration is the key to keeping your skin looking healthy and happy. There are definitely products out there for everyone, and I feel like I’ve given you some really good options to get started in the world of anti-ageing moisturizers.

Antioxidants and collagen, as well as vitamins will also aid in making those fine lines and wrinkles do a disappearing act, so be on the lookout for these components when you look for a moisturizer.

Remember that there is no magical cocktail when it comes to mature skin, everyone’s needs and wishes are different, and because of this, have a look at the products in this list that might work for you and then decide if you want to give them a try.

All of these moisturizers will do wonderful things for you, and keep in mind that it is always better to do something, rather than doing nothing. Just by researching this topic, you’re already on your way to healthier, younger looking skin!

So, any products you will be giving a try? Did I include your favourite in the list? Let me know in the comments!

Keep glowing!
